Yours Truly

Well hello there, my name's Emily. I'm an extrovert who has a slight problem with overcommitting because, quite frankly, I really enjoy doing all sorts of things. I write - fiction, essays, articles, poetry, reviews, etc. I play music - percussion, vocals. I act - live theatre, quite a few short and full-length indie films. I like to take pictures. I'm a great copy editor. And I've somehow managed to organize several successful live shows (music, drag, burlesque, etc.). Mostly, I'm fascinated by the world, the people in it, and all of the things there are to do and see. I want to do whatever I can to help tell people's stories and get a better understanding of their/our experiences.

Currently, I live in Madison, Wisconsin, because I've fallen in love with the place. I took a slightly roundabout way of getting here, though, having come through Minnesota, Illinois, and Oklahoma first. Madison drew me in through friends and college but kept me through pretty much everything else about it. During all of this, I played for several bands (Milk, The Beat-Me-Ups, Forte Diem, Aporia, and now The Shabelles and Little Red Wolf), wrote a bunch of stories, worked some odd jobs, and generally tried to make myself useful.

At the moment I do all sorts of writing, editing, and photography for Dane101.com (for which I am now also a co-editor), as well as some freelance work for Isthmus, 77 Square, Our Lives Magazine, and others. I recently self-published my first novel, The Fix Up, and have managed to garner some positive reviews and a live reading at two local bookstores. I've had short stories and poems published in Free Verse, Black Rock and Sage, and Madison Magazine.

In 2008, I managed to throw a wildly-successful-beyond-all-expectations event at the Majestic Theatre here in Madison, somewhat irreverently called "Hot Mess: The best in Midwest drag and burlesque." Since then, people have actually continued to ask for my help in putting together similar shows, including the now annual Fire Ball at the High Noon Saloon.

I'm also an avid road and mountain biker (which I intend to do more writing about soon), traveler, ultimate frisbee player, tea drinker, dog-less dog lover, and happily partnered lady.
